All matter takes up space. There are solids which have a set of shapes,liquid takes volume, gases have no set shapes or volume. Solids chang from one state to any their. Heat applied to an ice cube converts it to a liquid. Liquids boiled b come a gas. A tub filled with water is a liquid. Put a solid object in a tub and it will over flow because the solid box takes space. If you mix a solid and a liquid it can convert to a gas. If you mix a teaspoon of baking soda with half a bottle of vinegar, then place a balloon over the tip of the bottle of vinegar you will see the balloon fill up with gas.
